Hey guys! So this blog is going to be mostly beauty and fashion based. However, I'm also going to do occasional little musings and thoughts on life and other issues. Today's topic is going to be revision.
Now, I know you're all thinking, "Right, she's going to sound just like all my teachers", but I promise I'll try not to. I'm not doing this to preach or lecture any of you - these are my thoughts on this subject (usually thought up when I'm at college and actually supposed to be doing work). So without further ado, let's jump into our first life issue.
We all know that we should revise - our teachers and parents remind us often enough. But let's face it, most of us will always be able to find something more important to do (and then, of course, it turns out this 'more important' thing isn't actually more important). I'm not going to lie. When I was at high school (Years 10 and 11, or when I was aged 15 and 16) I generally didn't revise for class tests too much. For my language vocabulary tests (which, unfortunately I had twice a week - once for German and once for French), I usually spent half an hour before the class in the morning going through the vocab. I'd be able to remember most of it for the test, got good marks and then promptly forgot it as soon as I was out of the classroom. This method of revision served me well in most other subjects too. Of course, you shouldn't actually do this (and at the risk of sounding hypocritical, I highly suggest you don't), but I could always find the weirdest, most ridiculous reasons for putting off revision. And this, my friends, is not the best way to go about things.
For my GCSEs, I did actually do some work. I started revision at home about a month before the exams. Now, for me this was very early, but it's actually quite late. If you think about it, it's only four weeks. Not including weekends (when I generally went out with friends or watched TV instead), it's only 20 days of revision. Think about 2 hours a day on average and it's really not a lot. I got good grades in my exams, and I was really pleased. Who knows, maybe if I'd started revising 3 months before the exams I might have done better, but I was incredibly happy with what I got. And when I started college last September, I was determined to work harder and get good grades again.
To my credit, for the first month of college I stuck to this promise. I revised all of the work we did after lessons and I did it enthusiastically (what?!? Can this be true?). But, like always, after a few weeks I began to find better things to do. Now don't get me wrong, I want to succeed. I'm thinking of a career either in Law (City Lawyer) or Psychology (possibly a Clinical, Educational or Forensic Psychologist), and I want to get into a good university. All of the ones I'm looking at are part of the Russell Group of universities (basically, Britain's answer to America's Ivy League) and therefore in order to get in, I need to be better than the other candidates. I need amazing grades. We did mock exams a few weeks ago, and my results were a shocking reminder that, actually, AS Levels are harder than GCSEs and so I need to work harder than I ever have before.
Like I said, I'm not trying to preach like a teacher or parent. I'm merely stating the facts that I've noticed and now understand. No matter how interesting the hot new TV series looks, no matter how important my emails are, no matter how desperate I am to finish the chapter in my book, I have to push myself to revise instead. My real exams are in May, which is just 3 months away. I used to wonder what GCSE grades I would have got had I started revising 3 months before the exams rather than just 1 - let's see what AS Levels I can get instead.
